What did Jimmy notice about Molly?

Jimmy noticed several differences about Molly, physically and her behavior.
Molly had grown into a lady, in her absence. “She always had a nice face”, but “now it was absolutely terrific”, Jimmy described his reaction to his sister’s beauty to being “knocked” down “with a feather”. Feathers are usually very light, gentle and delicate, he described her beauty so close to perfection that it knocked him out. “With her big blue eyes, red lips, and pink-and-yellow and crinkly hair” Molly looked all grown up. She even wore lipstick which she never used to; “even her arms and legs looked grown up.” Jimmy also noticed Molly’s vocal change. Her voice seems to be more lyrical; when she spoke “it had a lot of side, and went up and down like the scales n a piano.”

Jimmy noticed that his conversations with Molly “were only odd bits of chit-chat with long silences between”, he started to realize his distance between him and his sister are now further apart than they were, as their conversations were filled with awkward silences. Jimmy also realized that, Molly returned to who she was once they got inside the house. “She became more like the Molly of years before, rushing around in a great frit, digging up some old bathing costume because she had left her other one behind in Wellington, and laughing at Mum when she said, ‘Really, Molly, you’ve hardly set foot in the house when you’re up to silliness again.’” Shows how Jimmy realizes that Molly seems to be more comfortable, and at ease, once she’s back home.
