Mark Bauerlein, a professor of English at Emory, quoted that the young generation (people under 30) is stupefied by the digital age and are the dumbest generation. I strongly disagree that the young generation is the dumbest one for several reasons.
Why does Mark Bauerlein with some other adults think the young generation is the dumbest generation? Is it because the new generation spends a lot of time infront of computer? Mark Bauerlein said the new generation does not read, does not go to the museum and does not do much homework.
However, this is not true. The young generations do a lot of reading on the internet. Just because they do not read a real book does not mean that they do not do much reading. A lot of news or editorials on the internet help students to learn.
Some students are interested in art galleries and some are not, however, the students who are not interested in them are not stupid just because they are not interested in them. Mr. Bauerlein should respect the likings of different individualities.
Young generations are not stupid just because some of them do not do homework. In every generation, there are trouble-makers who do not do what they are told but a lot of students in the young generation do their homework and Mr. Bauerlein has no proof to say that the students of the young generation do less homework than the generation before.
Technological advances has allowed the young generation to participate in online activities such as chatting, e-mailing, spending time on MySpace, reading internet articles, etc. Adults and Parents think this is a waste of time and has no educational aspects in them. However, according to a recent study, students learn basic social skills, technical skills and are exposed to a whole different variety of information which can lead to educational improvements.
On internet, youth can choose what they want to see. This is another big change from an old and conservative learning in schools where the teacher choose the material to teach the students without any opinions of them. By being able to choose what they want to see or learn in the internet, they can develop in areas where they are interested in which can help them in their careers when they are older.
Adults think the young generation is dumb because they spend less time on what they used to do while they were young and do something else such as surfing the internet, finding information on the computer, do online activities, play video games, etc. Just because students now spend time on internet when they are free when students 30-40 years ago played in the field does not mean the young generation is stupid. It may be scary to the adults to accept the fact that youth can spend time differently to them and they just try to criticize on what the youth are doing. However, different does not mean wrong. Adults, including Mr. Bauerlein, should accept the fact that the world is changing overtime and so as the way of spending time.
The young generation is not the dumbest generation. Although adults think spending time online is no use and is harmful to people so the generation using the internet the most, which is the young generation, is the stupidest according to the adults. However, participating in online activities increase social skills, technical skills and allow students to experience a whole variety of information. The older generations should accept that the young generation is not stupid but different.
