Mark Bauerlain says that people under the age of 30 are classified as the “Dumbest Generation”. He thinks this because people these days are not reading enough books but instead are going to the internet to chat, watch videos etc. Even though people don’t read books, it does not mean that people don’t read. People still read things from newspapers, to adverts in the television.
Also, Mark Pauerlain said that most high school kids don’t really do a whole lot. They don’t read, don’t go to museums or get involoved in community life and they don’t do much homework. However we can’t blame it on the kids. More importantly, we should blame it on the teachers and parents since they’re the ones who don’t take the kids on museums or make sure their doing homework.
Parents and teachers also criticize that students are not bright, not reading enough books, using limited vocabulary, using slang, spelling bad. Why are the teachers criticizing?! They should be the one who is supposed to help the kids. The teachers and parents should give them support by giving them some work to do in their free time. By doing this, the students know that you are giving them support and will most likely motivate them to working harder. If you don’t give the kids support, this will cause them to have no motivation and therefore, they’re just going to give up and not even try.
In this era we are in, it is true that people are not using the internet correctly and are using it just for chatting or watching movies, but again, we can’t put the blame on the kids. It’s the parents responsibility to check if the kids are doing homework and are making sure they are using the internet for the right purposes.
Are we the ones who are “dumb” because we use the internet instead of reading books to research on things? Or is it because it’s less time consuming? I mean, instead of looking at many book stores or even having to travel around the world to get the book you want, you can just look at information in the internet. As you can see, you can get information on something in like five minutes instead of two days. So this is why more people use the internet more often to do research.
In conclusion, Mark Bauerlain says that as kids grow older, they won’t be able to get jobs because of their bad social skills; their vocabulary is not good; not reading enough books etc. This is false. Just because we are young does not mean we are ‘dumb’. Maybe it is the way we look or the choice of our vocabulary that determines whether we are dumb or not, but that does not mean we are ‘dumb’. If you look at people from different perspectives and getting to know them instead of looking at their physical appearances, then you can see a whole new different person and realize that the person who you thought was dumb may not be that dumb.
