Are we really the dumbest generation?

“Dumbest Generation” quoted from Mark Bauerlain an English professor at Emory University, having said that people under of the age of 30 is said to be the dumbest generation, since this technology age is brainwashing the recent generation with the use of new technology such as movies, internet etc. He made his point by statistical facts like 35% of students going to 9th grade cannot make it to 12th grade. Reasons like the exposure of looking at a screen for hours and hours affects the way we communicate affects the way we act on the outside world, especially with communication. And having to be on MySpace or face booking 24/7 avoiding time to read.

On the other hand, from what was said, I disagree, because although we are changing the way we do things, we would still learn a lot, but now it has to be done differently. It’s also probably because Mr Bauerlain is used to the way they were studying out of books, that he isn’t aware of the changes. A study was held on by Mizuko Ito and his team a research scientist at the University of California. His study showed that new technology has its benefits. As we all know that communication verbally is a social skill which has been changed, because now our recent generation is communicating with the technology we have, texting, chatting finding new ways of socializing. Every day the world is changing but one thing that never changes is communication. Communication is a key thing in humanity. Whether it’s through technology or verbal use. He also said that although MySpace, face book etc. Is affecting everyone worldwide it helps us socially, making new friends by simply reading information about them. Internet can also be referred to as a new technology of newspapers, and people go on the internet so that they could be updated faster rather than waiting for information in the morning, it also helps our green environment.

Parents are one key factor that can affect on how kids will grow up and turn out to be. Parents nowadays are criticizing their kids because of over exposure on the net and such. But instead they should be guiding their kids to the new age working together on how the new age works. Kids lives could change just because of how their parents raised them, mainly with hatred against them. However, the bad side of having parents being relaxed with their children on new technology and leaving them in their room all the time, can destroy the family. Communication between families could be awkward in a way; kids could be hot tempered since there not used to having their parents telling them what to do.

This leads to the question “is it really our fault for being the dumbest generation?” or “are we really meant to be the dumbest generation?”

As for my conclusion, I disagree that we are the dumbest generation. Just because we are in between the merge from the industrial age to this new age where we are just exploring the uses of new technology, and having to be the younger one. There could be times where we can be lazy and stupid but technology is giving us a big boost with our studies making it easy too research and being updated on things. So the thought of us being the dumbest generation should be something to look over again.
